Traffic and Transportation Upgrades and Enhancements
Wynn Resorts and Related Companies understand that residents may be apprehensive about how a new resort in the neighborhood will impact local traffic. With that in mind, we planned a multi-pronged strategy to both alleviate traffic concerns while improving overall flow throughout the Hudson Yards area, largely via infrastructure improvements and programs that address a variety of local and commuter issues. The overall improvements include:
Improvements to 11th Avenue
New crosswalks, pedestrian ramps, and traffic signals at West 32nd Street and West 31st Street will enhance traffic flow and facilitate pedestrian access to Wynn New York City and Hudson Yards West. The improved pedestrian infrastructure, including widened sidewalks, enhanced lighting, and designated crosswalks, will make the area safer and more comfortable.
Improvements to Pedestrian Safety
Generous building setbacks and a significant sidewalk widening on 11th Avenue and 33rd Street will be made to safely accommodate any increase in the number of pedestrians. The new 5.6-acre Hudson Green Park — a large, public open space to the south of Wynn New York City — will allow for casual gathering and will be closely monitored by Wynn New York City and Hudson Yards security.
Significant Structural Improvements to West 33rd Street
Improvements will be made to West 33rd Street west of 11th Avenue. The project will rebuild and elevate West 33rd Street so it’s all at one level, allowing direct, “at-grade” vehicle and convenient pedestrian access to the resort, its adjacent new park, and the High Line. The resort’s primary porte-cochere on the newly elevated 33rd Street will welcome guests arriving by car and taxi and will provide access to gaming, hotel, ballroom and conference venues. The new street will also offer garage access for valet parking. The new street will terminate in a cul-de-sac, eliminating any cut-through traffic from 12th Avenue. Meanwhile, access to the Javits marshalling yards will continue off 12th Avenue below the new 33rd Street.
Additional Bike and Pedestrian Access
The Manhattan Greenway Trail, a paved two-way pedestrian and bike lane separated from vehicle traffic on New York’s West Side, is a major component of Manhattan’s north-south bike corridor and is adjacent to the Hudson Yards area planned for development. This popular bike and pedestrian path connects Lower Manhattan to West Harlem, the Henry Hudson Bridge, and the South Bronx. In addition to new access points from the path and Hudson River Park to the Hudson Yards development, Wynn New York City and Related Companies have planned new bicycle, scooter and e-mobility infrastructure and parking within the project to incentivize both employees and visitors to arrive and depart without the use of a motor vehicle.
Easy Access to Public Transportation
Most guests not staying at Wynn New York City will arrive in the early to late evening and will frequent the resort primarily on weekends. Because these resort visitors generally arrive after 7 p.m. and depart in the late evening, their visitation patterns will not conflict with the rush-hour traffic of neighborhood commuters. These local visitors will also be encouraged to access Wynn New York City from the nearby No. 7 subway line and numerous other neighborhood subway stops, as the entire Hudson Yards area is located within 10 minutes of a subway station. To welcome guests and alleviate the neighborhood’s concerns, Wynn’s security team will be prominently stationed at each resort entrance, including in close proximity to the newly raised corner of West 33rd Street and 11th Avenue.
Reduced Vehicle Traffic with a Hotel Adjacent to Javits Center
Currently, most attendees arriving at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center for conventions and meetings do so via taxi and ride-share vehicles, utilizing 11th Avenue and crossing between West 33rd and West 37th streets. With the construction of a 1,500-room hotel that’s directly adjacent to the Javits Center, a significant percentage of that vehicle traffic will be eliminated, as Wynn New York City guests will enjoy the easy proximity of using a convenient entrance/exit at the resort and crossing to the Javits Center at West 34th Street and 11th Avenue.
New Access to the High Line
Access to the High Line will be enhanced via the newly elevated West 33rd Street and a link from the new 5.6-acre Hudson Green Park. While improving access for High Line visitors, these links also will provide a unique, visitor-oriented pedestrian corridor to access both the resort and the new park.
New and Improved Ferry Service Access
The West Midtown Ferry Terminal, offering NYC Ferry and NY Waterway service, is a seven-minute walk north of Hudson Yards. Improved access via the newly elevated West 33rd Street, as well as new stairway and elevator access, will create more convenient pedestrian access to ferry service. Wynn New York City also will work closely with local ferry companies to promote usage of these comfortable, well-appointed passenger boats, which promise to be especially popular with tourists.
